A Wave of Changes In This New Year

2014 Presidential Address

It is with great excitement that we WAVE in this new season both at Tulane University and at the headquarters of the Gumby Social Aid & Pleasure Club. The 2014-2015 year brings in immense changes, both for Tulane and our club. Let's break it down shall we?

But first... a quick thank you for 2013:

The 2013-2014 inaugural year for the GSAPC was a great one. With a few dozen other Gumbys I enjoyed festivals, instate trips, out of state trips, tailgates, meeting new friends, and spending time with old friends. Thank you for making our first year an immense success and more fun than we could have ever imagined.

But now, a new year for the GSAPC!:

This year plans to be busier than ever.

2014-2015 promises to bring in a wide array of new activities and sub Gumby krewes-

Gumby Yogis Club: headed by "Brogi" fanatics Alex Bernadett, Laura Smestad and yours truly, Gumbys each week join together for some Yoga. Currently, the GSAPC has been sending a contingency to Hot Yoga at the Nola Brewery, sponsored by Lululemon. Beer & Yoga... my kind of combination! Here's a pic of some Gumbys sweatin' it out:

Namaste y'all

Gumby Running Club: headed by Hannah Walker, the Gumby Running Club is a group of running Gumbys meeting Tuesdays at 7pm every week. The only rules: wear green, run, and have fun! Here are some pics of Gumby runners and an example route we did:

Bonus pic of our #1 Gumby runner! See him at the Jazz Half running in our honor!
See this link for details: Run for the Gumbys

Starting in the fall of 2014 the GSAPC is launching two new sub Gumby krewes-

Gumby's Doing Outreach: a once a month krewe that goes out into the city to join together in a day of Outreach. Alex Bernadett will probably lead this charge. Here he is after a charity long distance event he put on to raise awareness after the Boston Marathon attack:

Gumby "Frisby": this fall, headed by Libby Creim, the GSAPC will join a New Orleans Ultimate Frisbee league and play together every Sunday night. Our discs will be green of course:

Coupled with these sub krewes is our largest group, the GSAPC Tailgate Krewe. We will continue tailgating for basketball, baseball, and most importantly football at Yulman Stadium! Members can join the tailgate for free. Non members can pay a game day $10 for unlimited access at that tailgate or else BYOB and BYOF to join.

For more information on any of these groups or to formally join, please email us with inquiries at
__________________________________________________________________

In addition to all the new happenings, the GSAPC has been enjoying a rockin' summer. Gumbys celebrated White Linen Night, Running of the Bulls, Daiquiri Fest, Strawberry Fest, Oyster Fest, etc etc etc. NOLA is a city of festivals and the GSAPC takes full advantage!

Some of our upcoming events-

August 23rd- Our 2014-15 Season Kick Off Party.
Old members, new members, and inquiring folk are welcome to join us for Sloshball, QB challenge, BBQ, Saints watch party, and more. See this flier for details and RSVP at our Facebook event/page:

August 31st- A Labor Day Weekend Brunch
Dues paying members are invited to a brunch at the house of Melza Van Roijen. A thank you to old members renewing and a nicer formal welcome to new members.

Septermber 6th- Yulman Stadium Opener!!!
We'll have 2 tents up on the LBC quad for Yulman's opener. Wristbands for dues members will be handed out to ensure you get your drink on and $10 is asked for one time tailgaters. If you bring yo own contribution to the tailgate we waive dat.

SPEAKING OF YULMAN!!!

She's Almost done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Enjoy some of these pictures!!!:

President Fitts will be leading the Green Wave Nation, taking over for President Cowen.

Coach Pierce will be leading the Green Wave baseball team, taking over for legendary Coach Jones.

Summer Time and the Livin’s Easy. And Sticky. And T-Minus Less Than Two Months to Yulman!

Hello dedicated GSAPC followers and Tulane fans all of shapes, sizes, and statehoods!

GSAPC Secretary Alex Bernadett here.

 Summer Updates!!!

1) The GSAPC Running of the Bulls Krewe represented themselves admirably during the Pamplona Meets NOLA Festivities of July 12th. Bruised behinds1, sweat/sangria stained threads, and empty bottles of wine were our trophies at the end of the run. Muy bueno, GSAPCèrs!

2) GSAPC’s World Cup Finals Watch Party in the Riverbend was a smashing success! Mother Nature’s attempts to derail the day were for naught, as four GSAPC members made it to the 10am Camellia Grill Sunday Brunch just before this happened...

President Darling, NY Rep Tim Lindsay, and yours truly made it over to Cooter Brown’s at 10:58am (2 minutes before CB's opened) to secure a front row table for 15 to watch GERM vs. ARG. A spectacular krewe of Tulane/fùtbol fans joined us to catch a fantastic match.

     2) Expect to see some GSAPC Ultimate Frisbee Fundays this coming fall2!

     3) GSAPCer and GAPSA President Danny Sullivan is working overtime to secure a prime keg location for grads and professional students in Yulman Stadium3!

     4) GSAPCer Libby Creim is using her skills in design and getting-stuff-done to help put together GSAPC t-shirts and other paraphernalia for the upcoming school year!

That concludes the brief, but hopefully informative, Summer Updates!!!

Read on for updates on Members of the GSAPC Wave Council

I trust you are enjoying your summer months as much as the fine folks of the GSAPC Wave Council. Here’s a quick update on the life and times of your Founding Gumbies:

--> GSAPC Prez Jeff Darling is continuing his life as a PhD-candidate Neuroscientist this summer, working like a boss during the week and living like a boss on the weekends. He made time to take a trip back to Grand Ol’ Idaho and Minnesota to reconnect with his family and potato-based roots6.
Idaho's Natural Disaster

Flying Pie: If you don't know, you ain't from Idaho.

Luke and Jason continue their quest for Lynne's affection at BCSF

--> GSAPC Brains-Behind-The-Operation Lynne Firmin has also found time to take a few road trips during the Pelicans offseason7 . In addition to heading west for the annual Lynch Family Reunion in Wine Country, California in June and hitting up Bayou Country Superfest over Memorial Day Weekend, Lynne partook in an incredibly enviable trip across the Southeast USA with comrade Will Thompson. Needless to say, the resulting Facebook Photo Albums have been jaw-drop-to-the-floor awesome.
Proud GSAPCers/'Mericans in the Smokey Mountains
Family Photo: Hella Cali Style
--> GSAPC Veep John Scimeca received his Master of Education degree from Notre Dame, got engaged8, and will be moving to South America in the coming months to teach English to kids who can’t read good and want to learn to do other stuff good too9.

"And wuv, tru wuv, will fowo you foweva."
--> GSAPC Token Really, Really, Really, Ridiculously Good Looking Man10 Eric Peterson has been working up a storm in Washington D.C. as a State Policy Analyst for Americans For Prosperity11. In his free time, he may or may not have secured a role in the third season of House of Cards12.
House of Cards: Season 3, Introducing:
Eric Peterson, the innocent young man appointed to fill a vacancy in the US Senate.
His innovative plans promptly collide with political corruption, but he doesn't back down13
--> GSAPC Secretary Alex Bernadett has jumped into his third year of medical school at Tulane and has continued to expand the ways in which he broadens his education outside of the classroom14. He has found his old Hawaiian t-shirts15 to be both fashionable and weather appropriate for the NOLA Summer.
A Beauty, Beast, Beauty Sandwich.
L to R: GSAPCers Libby, Alex, and Asyl.

--> GSAPC Treasurer Pat Baldwin has been living it up in Alabama, learning everything about everything at the Harrison School of Pharmacy16, and attending MLB games when the opportunity presents itself.

Pat takes in "America's two great past times, baseball and air conditioning"
There’s so much more to say, but I see Mother Nature is cooking up another NOLA-styled Summer Thunderstorm (i.e. extra flavorful rain with a dash of lightning and a dollop of flooded streets17). Besides, I should leave it to my fellow Wave Council Members to give you actual, horrible-jokes-free GSAPC Blog Updates.

I leave you with a quote from Tulane's former hero/current arch rival/Darth Vader equivalent, Alton Ochsner:
"Early to bed, early to rise, work hard, and publicize."

For the Olive & Blue,

Alex Bernadett

Tailgates:

Homecoming-

It was a busy homecoming this year. Tulane brought home a nice win over the talented University of North Texas Mean Green. We plucked the Eagles! The GSAPC tailgate welcomed over 50+ people and hosted visiting/travelling fans from the following states:

Texas
Kansas
Tennessee
Florida
New York
Alabama
Louisiana
New Jersey

They weren't disappointed as the wave turned it out 24-21. Here's some pics!:

Video Hightlights-

ECU- (Pics stolen shamelessly from Tulane webpage)
The Wave wasn't finished though! They turned it up the very next week vs. ECU! In what has been called the biggest Tulane win in a decade, Tulane tore it up and beat ECU in triple OT 36-33. Any older fans sure had a heart attack or 4 as Devin Powell rep'd Tulane well for an injured Nick Montana. Tulane fans are sure to come out of the woodworks after this big W!

Always a great tribute!

All they do is win win win no matter what!

NOW ON TO TULSA!

CuJo gave the team a week off... which meant weights and film this week. A good thing! Our players are banged up and needed this rest time for midterms and health recuperation. We move on to take on the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. The Green Wave hasn't beaten Tulsa since 1968 and they avg 20+ pt wins over us. Time to change dat!

The GSAPC will be throwing a helluva hullabaloo costume theme tailgate, so come dressed to impress. Handle of liquor to the costume most celebratory of the season of winning. Here's a link to the event on Facebook:

Nuff said.

Scott Cowen promised to stop by the tailgate so make sure you're dressed to impress! And liquored up to tell him how you really feel....
