Tulane Tidbits & GSAPC glory

Good morning world! LF here to update you on the past few weeks as a Gumby. I've got a few things I'd like to share. :)

My Tulane Emotions:
I never thought I'd be more excited and proud to be a Tulane Green Wave fan during an 0-2 start. We are three games in now (1-2) and I've already experienced SO much excitement from the season. Yulman stadium, obviously, is the primary source. We've all been counting down the days until our moment to shine in our own stadium, I was a giddy little kid when I walked through Tailgate Village and saw so many people greened out and genuinely excited about a Tulane football game. It was such a foreign sight to me. Typically, I'm with a family of Tulanians that has stacks of extra tickets and I'm bribing my other friends to come. This time, I had non-Tulanians asking me all week how they could get tickets. I have never had so many non-Tulane fans tell me that they wanted to check out some games. It makes me feel so proud being able to talk about how I grew up running around the empty seats of the Superdome in my Tulane gear while my mom and uncles tried to teach me the Hullabaloo.... (PS: I was always nervous about saying the Hullabaloo as a kid because I thought "Hell" was a bad word and didn't want to say "hell of a" - my mom reassured me that "Helluva" was a completely different word and 100% appropriate to yell.)

GSAPC Y'ALL!!
OK- I have to give some serious props to EVERYONE involved with GSAPC. I have always tried and tried to get more young people to support Tulane. And, of course, my best friends were ARE those that shared my same passion throughout all of college. We were those kids  every game - the only ones in the student section. After 4 years of trying to beef up the student section and one year being a graduate and trying to resist going to the student section... on May 18, 2013 I took a weekend trip to Mobile with 5 of my best friends, where we finally decided to take some action and put our shenanigans into some sort of organized fashion. It began just us 6, with the help of a few other friends, calling ourselves a club and making everything we did an "official event" After a few meetings with others in the Tulane community, teaming up with the wonderful folks of the Tulane Alumni Association and taking some expert advice from Mrs. Hullabaloo, we've started to get the hang of this. Now we have over 60 members, Gumby swag, and sub-krewes. That means we're successful, right? We're gettin' there, y'all, and I get more and more pumped up with every GSAPC meeting. And just for the record, our events are extending beyond just tailgating (running club, yoga club, outreach club) and we will even be incorporating some "social aid"!

The 1st Game
Well, if you have talked to me, like, at all, since September 6th, you'll know that I have plenty to say about my first experience at Yulman Stadium. So, the point of this blog is to share my thoughts and write about current happenings of GSAPC, right? I'm assuming that means I'm allowed to both ramble and be a critic  so here's my Yulman opener stages :

Prepping: I had such mixed emotions getting ready for the big day. Half of me was wanting to spend all day Friday cooking some sort of themed food and snacks, putting together the best game day outfit, and digging out some face tattoos. Half of me was frantic about figuring out where to park and trying to help my grandpaw find a good spot that wasn't too far away. I was too excited to concentrate or worry about anything, but stressed out at the same time. It was a weird feeling. Thanks to Jeff working out some great plans with TAA, we had a tailgate plan. Thanks to Asyl's brother, I knew where I was parking. Thanks to my restlessness and my kitchen, I made some pretty good honey bbq chicken sliders to share. And thanks to Elios and Alex, we had a keg of green beer lined up.

Tailgating: I was sporting a "Party Like it's 1974 Tee" from Campus Connection and a sweet Tulane fedora that I successfully bid on at the Greenie Gals Tee.

My fam was there of course!

My best college friends were there. We had a prime location. It looked pretty outside, but it was hot as hell. I didn't mind the sweat. I was very impressed with the tailgate village and blown away by the crowd of greenies. After soaking it in, visiting with fellow alumni that I hadn't seen in a while, playing some drinking games, and singing the fight song with the band, it was all of a sudden time to go!

AB approved. I think Mike Styles did too (pictured left)

Frustration: Ok, fast forward like an hour - I missed kick off. NOT GOOD. I'm pretty sure that's why we lost. I mean, it's bad luck to miss kick off. I had gotten a couple extra tickets at the last minute for my parents, so we had to go grab them before heading in. There were only 2 windows open and TONS of people waiting... I do not understand why we couldn't have more windows open. Every article I read advertised that it was a sold out game.  I work in the business of ticket sales and service... if the game is sold out, you typically have the box office prepared with staffing to handle a big crowd... Anyways, I got the tickets and moved on to the next line to get in. A little long, but not terrible. Once we got in, after stopping and staring in disbelief that I was actually in Yulman stadium, I started to panic. I"m not sure what was going on but it looked like the marching band was walking across the concourse to get into their section - I guess I just missed their pre-game show - but the shoulder to shoulder crowd making their way down the concourse was NOT moving. This stressed me beyond belief because, like I said, it's bad luck to miss kick off!!
Finally: I get to my seats and forget my problems. Wow, what a sight. Looking at the field and just thinking, this is our field. This is our stadium..  this is Tulane..this is real... The student section is packed!?
Empty Seats: What's up with all the empty seats across the way in the fancy section? The bleachers were PACKED but the top dollar folks didnt show? Too bad that's the TV side. Can I get a comp upgrade? Nah, I like my bleacher seats with the young alumni trying to relive our days as students ;)
The heat: Yea, the heat was miserable. But hey, it's Louisiana, y'all. I'm hesitant to complain because the LSU fans may say something like I'm weak... whatever. For a hot second I missed the A/C of the Dome. No- that's definitely a lie. I'll take the heat.
Too bad we lost to Georgia Tech - yea, I expected that. That's all I'll say about that.

BUT GSAPC GOT 15 NEW MEMBERS! Yeah! 15 new members from our first tailgate! Now THAT's a success. We MUST be doing something right.. another toast, please!!

Our 2nd game against Southeastern was a BLAST! Obvi, we were #winning. It was fun playing against another local school. I always like the southeastern game. my cousin comes with her crew - shout out Lauren Lynch and the Lions - and just like that. I have a tiny interfamily rivalry goin on. Naturally, I ran into her stocking up on Boot pizza after the game.... I think she secretly wishes she went to Tulane with me ;)

Confused Southeasterners at the Gumby Tailgate after a TU-SELU flip cup challenge.

The tailgate was successful all over again. Not as many new members, but LOTS of GSAPC t-shirts that came back for the fun! In fact, when I was walking over to the Alumni House with a case of Bud Light on my back, I saw a gal biking by in a gumby shirt and, this may sound weird, but I was SO EXCITED because I didn't know her. (Now I do.We flip cupped it out.) How cool is it that our gumby spirit is spreading?

More Gumby Please!!
I know what y'all are thinking... wow you are just talkin up your club's tailgates over here, but we've got 3 weeks for another game. Yawn. Oh, don't you worry - we'll be having watch parties, DUH! We'll be sending y'all an invite to a watch party this Saturday at Rock n Bowl very soon so stay tuned, folks!!

Road trip, anyone??? I'm currently planning on taking a drive to Houston for our November 8th game against UH. Anyone interested? I think we're considering making this a Gumby Outing?

And I just want to close with this:
My friends are THE best..........

I wanted to give a good ole greenie shout out to 2 of my favorite people:  Libby Creim and Jeff Darling.... Libby wasn't with the original Mobile-trip-taking-gsapc-planning krewe, but she has become such a huge part to the GSAPC leadership krewe. Everyone sporting a Gumby shirt or koozie should thank her, because I'm not sure that would have ever happened without her. She is taking this club to a new level... and she even humors me when I've had just the right about of bud light to put me into a loud-voice-telling-you-my-life-story mood. She keeps me sane on game days. Plus, I mean, damn, that red hair. How can you not love her?
Jeff (far left) being a leader, as usual.
And Jeff, I gottta say I'm proud of this kid. I laugh about how I try to keep him organized, and I do turn my head a little at some of the spreadsheets him and AB come up with on our google drive. I have a bad habit of wanting to reorganize all of their documents, but that's just a minor fault ;) Jeff has done SO much to make GSPAC happen. It would never have existed with out him... and he's doing this WHILE getting his PhD in neuroscience. I may bicker with him on the regular but I have so much respect for him as a president. JDar, stop blushing, and please don't mention this sentimental moment we are virtually having.

New Members:Stay tuned to our Facebook page. We'll be highlighting all our new members every few days with fun pictures and blurbs about why we love you :)

I just wanna holler at my brother MJ Firmin who has been keeping up with our shenanigans while he's killin it in Knoxville, TN. MJ just graduated this past May and he is helping my cousin with a new non-profit in Knoxville while in the application process for the Peace Corps. I love his game day texts and our FF consulting sessions... I'm so lucky he can be such a big part of my football life while hes 600 miles away ;)
Here's MJ, being a badasss

Bottom line: GSAPC is awesome. Tulane football is getting there. My FF teams are winning (just wanted to throw that in there) I LOVE YULMAN. And life... is good. Cheers, see y'all on game day.

A Wave of Changes In This New Year

2014 Presidential Address

It is with great excitement that we WAVE in this new season both at Tulane University and at the headquarters of the Gumby Social Aid & Pleasure Club. The 2014-2015 year brings in immense changes, both for Tulane and our club. Let's break it down shall we?

____________________________

______________________________________

But first... a quick thank you for 2013:

The 2013-2014 inaugural year for the GSAPC was a great one. With a few dozen other Gumbys I enjoyed festivals, instate trips, out of state trips, tailgates, meeting new friends, and spending time with old friends. Thank you for making our first year an immense success and more fun than we could have ever imagined.

__________________________________________________________________

But now, a new year for the GSAPC!:

This year plans to be busier than ever.

2014-2015 promises to bring in a wide array of new activities and sub Gumby krewes-

Gumby Yogis Club: headed by "Brogi" fanatics Alex Bernadett, Laura Smestad and yours truly, Gumbys each week join together for some Yoga. Currently, the GSAPC has been sending a contingency to Hot Yoga at the Nola Brewery, sponsored by Lululemon. Beer & Yoga... my kind of combination! Here's a pic of some Gumbys sweatin' it out:

Namaste y'all

Gumby Running Club: headed by Hannah Walker, the Gumby Running Club is a group of running Gumbys meeting Tuesdays at 7pm every week. The only rules: wear green, run, and have fun! Here are some pics of Gumby runners and an example route we did:

Bonus pic of our #1 Gumby runner! See him at the Jazz Half running in our honor!
See this link for details: Run for the Gumbys

Starting in the fall of 2014 the GSAPC is launching two new sub Gumby krewes-

Gumby's Doing Outreach: a once a month krewe that goes out into the city to join together in a day of Outreach. Alex Bernadett will probably lead this charge. Here he is after a charity long distance event he put on to raise awareness after the Boston Marathon attack:

Gumby "Frisby": this fall, headed by Libby Creim, the GSAPC will join a New Orleans Ultimate Frisbee league and play together every Sunday night. Our discs will be green of course:

Coupled with these sub krewes is our largest group, the GSAPC Tailgate Krewe. We will continue tailgating for basketball, baseball, and most importantly football at Yulman Stadium! Members can join the tailgate for free. Non members can pay a game day $10 for unlimited access at that tailgate or else BYOB and BYOF to join.

For more information on any of these groups or to formally join, please email us with inquiries at
__________________________________________________________________

In addition to all the new happenings, the GSAPC has been enjoying a rockin' summer. Gumbys celebrated White Linen Night, Running of the Bulls, Daiquiri Fest, Strawberry Fest, Oyster Fest, etc etc etc. NOLA is a city of festivals and the GSAPC takes full advantage!

Old members, new members, and inquiring folk are welcome to join us for Sloshball, QB challenge, BBQ, Saints watch party, and more. See this flier for details and RSVP at our Facebook event/page:

Hello dedicated GSAPC followers and Tulane fans all of shapes, sizes, and statehoods!

GSAPC Secretary Alex Bernadett here.

 Summer Updates!!!

1) The GSAPC Running of the Bulls Krewe represented themselves admirably during the Pamplona Meets NOLA Festivities of July 12th. Bruised behinds1, sweat/sangria stained threads, and empty bottles of wine were our trophies at the end of the run. Muy bueno, GSAPCèrs!

2) GSAPC’s World Cup Finals Watch Party in the Riverbend was a smashing success! Mother Nature’s attempts to derail the day were for naught, as four GSAPC members made it to the 10am Camellia Grill Sunday Brunch just before this happened...

President Darling, NY Rep Tim Lindsay, and yours truly made it over to Cooter Brown’s at 10:58am (2 minutes before CB's opened) to secure a front row table for 15 to watch GERM vs. ARG. A spectacular krewe of Tulane/fùtbol fans joined us to catch a fantastic match.

That concludes the brief, but hopefully informative, Summer Updates!!!

Read on for updates on Members of the GSAPC Wave Council

I trust you are enjoying your summer months as much as the fine folks of the GSAPC Wave Council. Here’s a quick update on the life and times of your Founding Gumbies:

--> GSAPC Prez Jeff Darling is continuing his life as a PhD-candidate Neuroscientist this summer, working like a boss during the week and living like a boss on the weekends. He made time to take a trip back to Grand Ol’ Idaho and Minnesota to reconnect with his family and potato-based roots6.
Idaho's Natural Disaster

Flying Pie: If you don't know, you ain't from Idaho.

Luke and Jason continue their quest for Lynne's affection at BCSF

--> GSAPC Brains-Behind-The-Operation Lynne Firmin has also found time to take a few road trips during the Pelicans offseason7 . In addition to heading west for the annual Lynch Family Reunion in Wine Country, California in June and hitting up Bayou Country Superfest over Memorial Day Weekend, Lynne partook in an incredibly enviable trip across the Southeast USA with comrade Will Thompson. Needless to say, the resulting Facebook Photo Albums have been jaw-drop-to-the-floor awesome.
Proud GSAPCers/'Mericans in the Smokey Mountains
Family Photo: Hella Cali Style
--> GSAPC Veep John Scimeca received his Master of Education degree from Notre Dame, got engaged8, and will be moving to South America in the coming months to teach English to kids who can’t read good and want to learn to do other stuff good too9.

"And wuv, tru wuv, will fowo you foweva."
--> GSAPC Token Really, Really, Really, Ridiculously Good Looking Man10 Eric Peterson has been working up a storm in Washington D.C. as a State Policy Analyst for Americans For Prosperity11. In his free time, he may or may not have secured a role in the third season of House of Cards12.
House of Cards: Season 3, Introducing:
Eric Peterson, the innocent young man appointed to fill a vacancy in the US Senate.
His innovative plans promptly collide with political corruption, but he doesn't back down13
--> GSAPC Secretary Alex Bernadett has jumped into his third year of medical school at Tulane and has continued to expand the ways in which he broadens his education outside of the classroom14. He has found his old Hawaiian t-shirts15 to be both fashionable and weather appropriate for the NOLA Summer.
A Beauty, Beast, Beauty Sandwich.
L to R: GSAPCers Libby, Alex, and Asyl.

--> GSAPC Treasurer Pat Baldwin has been living it up in Alabama, learning everything about everything at the Harrison School of Pharmacy16, and attending MLB games when the opportunity presents itself.

Pat takes in "America's two great past times, baseball and air conditioning"
There’s so much more to say, but I see Mother Nature is cooking up another NOLA-styled Summer Thunderstorm (i.e. extra flavorful rain with a dash of lightning and a dollop of flooded streets17). Besides, I should leave it to my fellow Wave Council Members to give you actual, horrible-jokes-free GSAPC Blog Updates.

I leave you with a quote from Tulane's former hero/current arch rival/Darth Vader equivalent, Alton Ochsner:
"Early to bed, early to rise, work hard, and publicize."

For the Olive & Blue,

Alex Bernadett
